Watch Glassblowing Demonstrations as Red-Hot Glass Takes Shape
About this spot
Okinawa's largest glass workshop, located in Fukuchi, Itoman City. Ryukyu glass is one of Okinawa's signature crafts, prized for its thick, rustic texture and unique character created by air bubbles and vibrant colors. At the workshop, artisans take molten red glass from the furnace, wind it on a blowpipe, and blow air into it to shape it—all free to watch. The spectacular sight of glass transforming as it receives the breath of life is unforgettable. The adjacent shop displays colorful glassware, vessels, accessories, and other one-of-a-kind glass creations. Glass-making experience programs are available (separate fee; confirmation required).
Tips
Workshops are free to observe, but the furnace area is very hot, so stay hydrated in summer. For a glassblowing experience, advance reservation is recommended. Carefully pack any glass purchases for air travel. Artisans take breaks when demonstrations stop; visit with time to spare during daytime or early afternoon rather than near closing.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Daytime to early afternoon ensures you'll see demonstrations clearly; better than late afternoon near closing.
