Subtropical Jungle Stroll Through a Natural Monument Palm Grove
About this spot
Located near the Yonehara settlement at the base of Omoto Peak (於茂登岳), Okinawa's highest mountain, this palm grove is designated a National Natural Monument. The Yaeyama Palm is endemic, growing nowhere else in the world but Ishigaki and Iriomote islands—a single genus and species. These palms stretch skyward to impressive heights. Well-maintained walking paths wind through thick growths of ferns and subtropical trees, creating a jungle-like atmosphere that opens into groves of magnificent palms. The gift shop near the entrance sells island fruits and fresh juices—a delightful treat during your stroll. Conveniently situated between Kabira Bay and the city center, it's an easy detour for an authentic subtropical forest experience.
Tips
Although the walking trail is shaded, the ground can be wet, so wear slip-resistant shoes. Mosquitoes are prevalent—bring insect repellent. The round-trip takes only 20–30 minutes, but stay on the marked paths for safety and to protect wildlife.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 40 minutes. The dappled morning light filtering through the canopy makes for an invigorating walk.
