Described as Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 628, with Kannon Bodhisattva as the principal deity. Passing through the vermillion-lacquered Treasure House Gate at the end of Nakamise-dori, you'll see the main hall directly ahead and the impressive 53-meter-tall Five-Story Pagoda to your right. The spacious temple grounds offer opportunities for prayer at the main hall and the classic experience of bathing in the smoke of the large incense burner. The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is said to originate from a riverside Buddhist memorial service held here in 1733, adding historical significance to your visit. On the festival day, many people visit in yukata, creating a quintessentially summer Asakusa scene.

1733年を起源に持つ、日本最古の花火大会のひとつです。2026年7月25日(土)19:00〜20:30、墨田区・桜橋下流から言問橋上流の第一会場と、駒形橋下流から厩橋上流の第二会場から、約20,000発が打ち上げられます。2つの会場から競い合うように繰り出すスターマイン・割物・創造花火の数々は空を余すところなく彩り、隅田川の川面に映る光の帯もまた格別の美しさ。川風に乗って届く音の振動、下町の夜空を照らす暖色の光は、江戸から続く夏の風物詩そのものです。フィナーレの大型スターマインが夜空を埋め尽くす約90分間は、この1日のクライマックスにふさわしい圧巻の光景です。
Tips
荒天・強風時は中止または延期の場合があるため、当日の開催可否は主催者の公式発表で必ず確認してください。終了後は浅草・押上方面のすべての駅が大混雑します。終了直後に移動せず、公園や川沿いで30分ほど余韻を楽しんでから移動すると混雑が緩和されます。帰りは最寄りの1駅隣まで歩いて乗車すると比較的スムーズです。

The Treasure House Gate marks the end of Nakamise-dori street, and admission to the temple is free. Entry to the inner sanctum is also free, but shoes must be removed—be prepared. During crowded times, praying from the plaza in front of the main hall is sufficient to experience the atmosphere. Temple restrooms tend to be crowded from evening onward, so it's reassuring to use them during this time.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes required. The vermillion color of the Treasure House Gate and Five-Story Pagoda stands out beautifully against the blue daytime sky.
