Summer visit to a traditional downtown shrine with beautiful drum bridges and ponds

About this spot

A historic shrine located in Kameido, Koto Ward, dedicated to Sugawara Michizane (菅原道真公), the deity of learning. The grounds feature three vermillion-painted drum bridges spanning small streams and ponds, with the beautiful contrast of greenery and the bridges reflected in the water making it a renowned landmark of the traditional downtown area. While the spring wisteria festival is particularly famous, the summer greenery also creates a calm atmosphere in the shrine grounds. On the day of the fireworks festival, the area around the shrine fills with people in summer kimonos, enhancing the festival atmosphere. After your visit, enjoy a traditional downtown experience by walking through the shopping streets around Kameido.

Tips
