Monju Bosatsu (文殊菩薩) is enshrined on the small hill of Mt. Kabuto (甲山) on the north side of Kumihama Bay, and, like Chion-ji (智恩寺) at Amanohashidate, is cherished locally as the bodhisattva of wisdom. The view from the grounds is exceptional, taking in Kumihama Bay, the sandbar 'Kotenkyo' (小天橋) that separates it from the Sea of Japan, and the horizon beyond. Getting a bird's-eye view of the bay by day, where tonight's fireworks will be launched, makes the evening's viewing even more enjoyable. After paying your respects, spend some unhurried time in the shade of the trees on the grounds, letting the bay breeze wash over you. The quiet air of this mountain temple gradually builds anticipation for the lively night of fireworks ahead.
Tips
Located on the north side of Kumihama Bay, on the slope of Mt. Kabuto. Parking is available. Some sections underfoot are stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The view of the bay from the grounds is very photogenic, so do not forget a camera or smartphone. It is about a 20-25 minute drive to the next roadside station.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour; midday's bright light is best for taking in the full view of the bay
