About this spot

Originating in the Rokko mountain range, the Ashiya River is a clear stream flowing right by Hankyu Ashiyagawa Station, and the promenade along the river is a favorite local spot for walks and weekend outings. Green trees cover both banks of the river, so even in summer you can walk in the shade and feel cool as you stroll. Walking from the station toward the sea, Ashiya's quiet residential streets and the river's scenery alternate, letting you take in the refined, gentle atmosphere so typical of Ashiya. There are also shallows where children can play and touch the water at the riverbank, making this a perfect warm-up spot before heading into the afternoon's sightseeing. The fact that the river flows toward Osaka Bay, where tonight's fireworks will be launched, is also part of the fun as it connects the story of the day.

Tips

A short walk from Hankyu Ashiyagawa Station, and about a 10-minute walk from Hanshin Ashiya Station. It's free. There's a lot of shade along the river, but the sun is still strong at this time of day, so don't forget to stay hydrated. There are bakeries and light-meal shops around the station, so having a light lunch before your walk lets you move comfortably to the next spot.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Especially pleasant around midday when sunlight filtering through the trees sparkles on the water's surface
