About this spot

A pool-and-stream stroll garden covering approximately 10,000 tsubo (roughly 3.3 hectares) that opened in 1992 on the site of Himeji Castle's former western samurai residences. Using the land divisions confirmed through archaeological surveys, nine gardens have been created. In the largest 'Oyashiki Garden,' colorful golden carp glide leisurely through the pond, delighting children watching from the bridges above. Gardens with different themes—the Tea Garden, Bamboo Garden, and Summer Tree Garden—are separated by fences, and passing through each gate reveals a completely different vista, creating the enjoyment of leafing through a garden picture scroll. The borrowed landscape view of Himeji Castle's keep beyond the earth walls is magnificent, offering a more refined and subtle experience of Japanese beauty compared to the castle's grandeur—a celebrated garden in Himeji for families to savor together.

Tips

Approximately 5 minutes' walk from Himeji Castle's entrance. Using the combined ticket with Himeji Castle saves money. The garden paths include stepping stones and gravel roads, but main pathways are well-maintained and accessible by stroller for the primary gardens. The tea room 'Soju-an' on the grounds offers matcha tea and Japanese sweets (fee applies). Evening after dusk during autumn illumination periods is crowded; daytime morning to early afternoon visits are quieter.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Morning light makes the garden's greenery and pond most beautiful, and mornings are relatively quiet
