About this spot

The Motomachi area spreading at the foot of Hakodateyama is the core of Hakodate tourism, with Western-style buildings and churches marking its history since the port's opening, lined along the slopes. Hachimantzaka in particular is Hakodate's signature viewpoint where the blue Hakodate Bay stretches in a straight line at the end of the stone-paved slope—ideal for photography. Slopes like Daizantzaka and Nijukkenzaka continue with distinct characteristics, interspersed with Meiji and Taisho-era structures such as the Russian Orthodox Church and the former British Consulate. This area allows you to naturally experience Hakodate's history and scenery just by walking, with different harbor views available down each alley.

Tips

The area is easily accessible on foot from Hakodateyama Ropeway base station toward Motomachi Park. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as the slopes are steep. Some facilities like the former British Consulate charge admission, but the slope walk and exterior views alone offer plenty to enjoy. The summer sun is strong, so bring water for frequent hydration breaks.

Best time to visit

Time required: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The afternoon light makes the slopes and sea views picturesque.
