Tsukumi Station (津久見駅) on the JR Nippo Main Line (JR日豊本線) is the starting point for sightseeing in Tsukumi City (津久見市). Shops and eateries line the area in front of the station, where you can enjoy lunch made with local ingredients. Tsukumi is also famous as a producer of mandarin oranges, and local diners serve set meals featuring fresh seafood as well. Since crowds concentrate in the evening on the day of the fireworks festival, filling up early in the day lets you spend the rest of the day at a relaxed pace. About 1 hour 10 minutes from Oita Station (大分駅) on the JR Nippo Main Line. Restaurants in front of the station can get crowded during the lunchtime peak, so aiming to arrive right at noon will mean less waiting.
