160-million-year-old striped cliffs and the spectacular Sea of Japan coastline
About this spot
Approximately 160 million years ago, hornfels (metamorphic rock) was created underground when magma made contact with limestone and mudstone. Over long periods, wave erosion exposed this geological landscape to the coast. The sight of striped cliffs with alternating white and black layers continuing for a height of 15 meters is overwhelming, and it is known as one of Yamaguchi Prefecture's representative natural landscapes. It has been designated as one of Japan's "100 Best Geological Sites" by the Ministry of the Environment. From the tip of the promontory, Susa Bay is in full view, and you can confirm the overall layout of the sea where tonight's fireworks will be launched during daylight hours. A walking trail is well-maintained, so families can walk safely.

須佐男命夏祭りのフィナーレを飾る花火大会で、須佐湾の穏やかな海上から約4,000発が打ち上がります。三方を丘に囲まれた入り江の地形が音を反響させ、花火の轟音が体に響く迫力は格別です。海面に映り込む光の帯と、頭上に大きく開く花火が重なる瞬間は、海辺の花火大会ならではの美しさ。萩市北部の小さな港町に夏の一夜だけ現れる非日常の光景を、潮の香りと波の音とともに砂浜から体験できます。都市の大規模大会とは違う、地域に根ざした祭りの温かさも須佐ならではの魅力です。

Tips
About 5 minutes by car from the roadside station. There is a dedicated free parking area. The rocky walking trail has slippery sections, so walking shoes are more reliable than sandals. Summer sun is intense, so bring a hat and drinking water. On windy days, the trail's end section can be gusty, so hold hands with young children.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The higher the afternoon sun, the more the stripe pattern contrast of the cliff face stands out.
