About this spot

The banks of the Nagara River downstream of Shimowatari Bridge (下渡橋), the launch venue for the fireworks display, take on a lively atmosphere as evening approaches with food stalls lining up. The embankment and riverbed along the river are easy to spread a picnic sheet on and are the classic viewing area. Watch the surface of the Nagara River dyed by the sunset while slowly enjoying dinner picked up from the stalls. The evening breeze crossing the river is pleasant, and one of the highlights is watching the color of the sky change moment by moment as the sun sets. It's reassuring to firmly secure your viewing spot an hour before the show starts.

Tips

On the day of the fireworks display, surrounding roads and parking lots get crowded, so secure public parking early. Handling food and drinks at the stall area between 17:00 and 18:00, before it gets crowded, gives you more breathing room. Portable restrooms are set up, but they tend to form lines, so it's reassuring to use them early. Areas close to the river become risky underfoot once it gets dark, so a small light is handy.
