The Settaya district in southern Nagaoka City is a cluster of brewing operations spanning from the Edo period, where miso, soy sauce, and sake breweries still stand as working facilities today, creating a charming streetscape. The former Kina Saffron Sake Brewery is particularly well-preserved, featuring white plastered main buildings, storage areas, and Western-style architecture built during the Meiji era, designated as a nationally registered tangible cultural property group. This valuable landscape conveys Nagaoka's modern industrial history, and simply walking through it transports you back in time. Spend a quiet afternoon—a striking contrast to the festive fireworks evening—slowly exploring the alleyways of Settaya.
Tips
Approximately 15 minutes by car or route bus from Nagaoka Station, or about 20 minutes by bicycle. The exterior is free to view, but check Nagaoka City's tourism information in advance for interior viewing schedules. The Settaya district also has sake breweries' direct sales shops where you may purchase miso and local sake souvenirs.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes required. The white plaster of the warehouses is beautifully illuminated by afternoon's angled sunlight.
