The Nagaoka Matsuri Grand Fireworks Festival is one of Japan's foremost fireworks events, begun to honor victims and celebrate the recovery from the 1945 Nagaoka air raid. On August 2 (Sunday) and 3 (Monday), 2026, launches will occur from both banks below Nagao Bridge from 7:20 PM through 9:25 PM. The main attraction is the 3-shaku tamaya, creating a light sphere approximately 650 meters in diameter—its thunderous roar is an impressive force felt throughout the body. The "Phoenix Fireworks" commemorating restoration wishes spread across the full river width, with the image of a giant phoenix soaring into the night sky and turning the river surface crimson creating a breathtaking moment. Including successive rapid-fire shells and large tamaya explosions, a combined total of approximately 20,000 fireworks over two days illuminate the Echigo night sky.

Check official Nagaoka City website and SNS from early morning on the day for weather-related cancellations or postponements. After conclusion, Nagaoka Station vicinity and return routes via bus and train experience extreme congestion; consider enjoying the afterglow for about 30 minutes on the riverbed before departing in a staggered pattern. Secure Jōetsu Shinkansen reserved seats in advance.
