About this spot

This historic shrine, honored as the ichinomiya (first shrine) of Echigo Province, has long been cherished by locals as the guardian shrine of Naoetsu. Its principal deities are Okuninushi no Mikoto and two other gods, and it's also known for blessings related to matchmaking and good fortune. It's said that Shinran Shonin (親鸞聖人), exiled to Echigo in 1207, landed here, and the shrine grounds still hold the legend of the 'Kataba no Ashi' (片葉の葦, one-sided reed) associated with him. The approach, wrapped in dense shrine forest, offers shade that softens the summer sun, letting you visit quietly in cool air even during the hottest part of the day. The Naoetsu Gion Festival is deeply rooted here as the local summer festival, and bowing to the guardian deity before the festival day begins really heightens the spirit of the trip.

Tips

About a 20-minute walk from Naoetsu Station, or about 5 minutes by car or taxi. Admission to the grounds is free. Parking is available on the shrine grounds, making it convenient for families traveling by car. If you'd like a goshuin (shrine stamp), check the shrine office's hours in advance.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. Even during the hottest hours, the tree-lined approach stays cool.
