Flow of the course

About this spot

The Yamaga Lantern Festival Evening Fireworks Display, held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, launches about 4,000 fireworks from a venue in Yamaga's town center around Sakura-yu (さくら湯). The Yamaga Lantern Festival is one of Kumamoto Prefecture's leading summer festivals, known for the lantern dance in which women perform with golden lanterns balanced on their heads, and this fireworks display has long been cherished as its cool-evening event. Because you watch the fireworks looking up from within the town, you get a view unique to Yamaga, where the glow of the golden lanterns and the light of the fireworks fill your sight at the same time. The roughly 4,000 fireworks fill the night sky above the town center, and the finale's rapid succession delivers a power fitting for the festival's climax.

Tips

The exact start time has not been finalized, so be sure to check the official announcements from the organizers and Yamaga City just before the event. Whether the display will proceed in bad weather should also be confirmed through official information. Roads and parking areas around the venue become very crowded after the display ends. If you have time to spare, lingering around the venue to enjoy the afterglow before moving can help you avoid the peak crowds. Some areas can be dark on the way home, so make use of your smartphone's light.

Best time to visit
