The National Fireworks Competition "Ōmagaté Fireworks" is Japan's most prestigious fireworks competition, continuing since 1894 (Meiji 27), and is counted among Japan's three major fireworks festivals. Selected master fireworks artisans compete in both daytime and nighttime divisions, with approximately 18,000 fireworks painting Ōmagaté's night sky. Rather than mere firework displays, competitive fireworks, uniquely themed and structured by each artisan, are artworks with the artist's will embedded in each burst. The finale, featuring wide-starmine and starmine explosions that use the full width of the Yomotsuogawa River to trace bands of light across the water surface, represents the pinnacle of Japanese fireworks culture. Savor over four hours of competition from 5:10 PM to 9:30 PM in the Tōhoku night breeze.

Paid seating requires advance purchase from the official website and typically sells out early. Free viewing areas are general seating on the levees, but early arrival is necessary to secure a spot. After the show, roads in Ōmagaté will be congested; we recommend enjoying the lingering impressions at the site for a while before departing, employing staggered timing to avoid traffic.
