About this spot
The National Fireworks Competition 'Omagari no Hanabi' is Japan's premier fireworks competition, running continuously since 1894 (Meiji 27), and is counted among Japan's three great fireworks festivals. Top pyrotechnicians selected from across the country compete in skill and beauty across daytime and nighttime divisions, with about 18,000 shells coloring the night sky over Omagari. Far from a simple display of launched fireworks, this competitive fireworks show unfolds with each pyrotechnician's own unique theme and composition, making every single shell a work of art infused with the creator's intent. The finale, where wide stars and star mines that make lavish use of the Omono River's width paint bands of light across the water's surface, is a sight that could be called the pinnacle of Japan's fireworks culture. Take your time to fully savor this competition, which unfolds over more than four hours from 5:10 PM to 9:30 PM, in the night breeze of Tohoku.

Paid viewing seats require advance purchase through the official website and typically sell out early each year. The free viewing area consists of general seating on the embankment, but you'll need to stake out a spot early. After the event ends, the routes back to JR Omagari Station and the shuttle buses get extremely crowded, so it's recommended to enjoy the afterglow on-site for a while after the finale before heading out, staggering your departure. Check the festival's official announcement for whether it will be held in case of bad weather.
