Spread across a mountain slope in Chikuma City, the Obasute Rice Terraces are a scenic spot representative of Shinshu, designated one of Japan's Important Cultural Landscapes. Known since ancient times in classical poetry as 'Tagoto no Tsuki' (the moon in every paddy), they're famous for the fantastical beauty of the moon reflected in each individual terrace. From the observation deck, the Zenkoji Plain and the Chikuma River spread out grandly, letting you fully enjoy by daylight the panorama celebrated as one of Japan's Three Great Train Window Views. Looking out from the hilltop over the dazzling summer green of the terraces and the flow of the Chikuma River, where fireworks will rise tonight, gives a sense that the story of the day is coming together as one. Against the backdrop of Shinshu's grand nature, it's also an ideal spot for a family photo.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Obasute Station on the Shinano Railway to the observation deck. If driving, there's parking space near the deck. Wear shoes suited for walking on the terrace paths. To help preserve the terraces, please don't step into the paddies themselves. Summer daytime sun is strong, so a hat and drinks are a must.
