A regional museum operated by Suwa City, offering easy-to-understand permanent exhibits on the natural environment of Lake Suwa, the history of Suwa dating back to the Jomon period, and the Onbashira Festival of Suwa Taisha Shrine, held once every seven years. The exhibits are arranged to be enjoyable even for families, with a life-size model of an onbashira log and festival footage that impresses even children. Visiting here first will make Suwa Taisha Shrine and Lake Suwa, which you'll visit later in the day, appear much richer to you. Starting your day in Suwa here is a great way to boost your overall satisfaction with the sightseeing.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from JR Kami-Suwa Station. Admission is around 200 yen for adults (please check in advance). Closed on Mondays, so check official information before visiting. The interior is air-conditioned, making it a comfortable first stop on a hot day.

About 1 hour. It's less crowded around midday, so you can take your time viewing the exhibits
