About this spot

The gateway to the sea for Oma Town, the town at Honshu's northernmost tip, where the ferry 'Ohakomaru' connects to Hakodate, Hokkaido, across the Tsugaru Strait in about 90 minutes. Inside stands a large tuna sculpture fitting of Oma, along with shops and a restaurant selling tuna goods and souvenirs. Tonight's fireworks will be launched from the nearby former ferry pier, so it's reassuring to secure a spot on the quay or in the plaza during the evening. Watch the Tsugaru Strait turn the colors of sunset while waiting for the show to begin in the sea breeze.

Tips

On the day of the fireworks festival, viewing spaces start filling up from early on. It's reassuring to arrive and secure a spot by around 5 p.m. Check the location of nearby public restrooms in advance. From evening on, temperatures drop and the sea breeze can pick up, so keep a light jacket somewhere easy to grab.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 45 minutes. The sun setting into the sea and the sunset over the Tsugaru Strait make this the most beautiful time of day
