Marugame City is a town in Kagawa Prefecture, the birthplace of Sanuki udon, and the area around the station is lined with affordable, authentic udon restaurants. The firm, chewy noodles and richly flavored broth offer a genuine taste you can only find here, making for a wonderful first bite to kick off your sightseeing. Many shops are self-service, letting you top your bowl with tempura and other ingredients yourself — a style kids enjoy too. Several shops are within a 5-10 minute walk of JR Marugame Station. At self-service shops, you carry a tray along a service line, so even first-timers can order without confusion. You can order udon starting from a single serving, so light eaters need not worry. Local sweet shops using wasanbon sugar for dessert after your meal are also scattered around the station area.
