The climax of the Shibushi Minato Festival Fireworks (志布志みなとまつり花火大会) — about 10,000 fireworks color the night sky over Shibushi Bay (志布志湾). With the port as its stage, the display has an open, unobstructed setting unique to a port-side fireworks show, and the sight of bands of light reflecting on the water's surface overlapping with the large bursts opening overhead is breathtaking. Boasting one of the highest fireworks counts in southern Kyushu, the show builds toward its finale with rapid-fire bursts that you feel resonate through your body. Looking up together as a family at the fireworks in the night breeze off the port, carrying the scent of the sea, makes for a fitting close to the day. Be sure to check the day's official announcement for the exact starting time. The event may be canceled or postponed in severe weather. Roads and parking lots around the venue get very congested after the show, so rather than rushing to leave right after the fireworks end, it's smoother to wait a while before heading home. Some areas are dark underfoot, so move around safely using a small flashlight or your smartphone's light.
