Completed in 1923 (Taisho 12), this approximately 1,140-meter canal is rare nationwide as a "reclaimed waterway"—built by filling in the seaward side rather than excavating inland. Stone warehouse clusters line the gently curving waterway, and 63 gas lamps dot the promenade, creating a scene that epitomizes Otaru tourism. Once bustling with lighters (small barges) supporting port logistics, the area has been transformed into a scenic promenade after its heyday, with warehouses reborn as restaurants and shops. The waterside esplanade from Asakusa Bridge (浅草橋) to Central Bridge (中央橋) is quiet in the morning, allowing you to monopolize the serene reflection of the warehouse clusters in the clear air. A couple strolling together is sure to capture a scene worthy of a movie frame.
Tips
About 10 minutes on foot from JR Otaru Station (JR小樽駅) heading straight seaward on Chuo Street (中央通り). The classic photo spot is from Asakusa Bridge Street Park (浅草橋街園) or Central Bridge (中央橋). Sea breezes pass along the canal, so bringing a light jacket is recommended even in summer. Time permitting, you can also enjoy the view from a canal cruise (fee applies).
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Recommended in the morning when there are fewer people and the air is crisp. Evening revisit when gas lamps are lit is also an option.
