Built in Temiya (手宮), where Japan's earliest railways operated, this museum focuses on railways and science. Numerous steam locomotives and vintage passenger cars are displayed outdoors, with interactive exhibits allowing visitors to see and touch items up close—hugely popular with children. The museum interior also features science experiment corners, allowing learning through play even on rainy days. The spacious grounds allow physical activity, making it an ideal stop for working off energy before swimming. East Otaru Swimming Beach (東小樽海水浴場) is just a short distance away, ensuring smooth travel.

Tips
石浜のためビーチサンダルが必須です。裸足で歩くと痛いので、水遊び用の靴があるとより快適です。トイレは水洗と仮設が用意されていますが、更衣スペースは限られるため、水着を着てから向かうとスムーズです。駐車場も無料ですが、夏の週末は混み合うことがあるので早めの到着がおすすめです。
Tips
Conveniently close to East Otaru Swimming Beach (東小樽海水浴場) within walking distance. The outdoor exhibit area is large, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In summer, sun is strong, so don't forget a hat.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Early afternoon hours allow relatively relaxed viewing of both the museum and outdoor exhibit areas.
