Kuchinotsu Port (口之津港)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Located at the tip of the Shimabara Peninsula in the southern part of Minamishimabara City, Kuchinotsu Port is a historic port that thrived as a coal transshipment hub during the Meiji era, with many foreign ships passing through. Today it supports local life as the departure and arrival port for the ferry connecting to Onikeshi Port in Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture. From the port, you can look out over the sea to the Amakusa Islands, and the appeal here is strolling in the crisp morning air while feeling the sea breeze. Take in the relaxed atmosphere of this port town at the start of your day, looking out over the same sea you'll visit later at Shirahama Beach.

Tips

The area around the port is flat and easy to walk, making it stroller-friendly too. Vehicles come and go around ferry departure and arrival times, so it's best to view from a bit of a distance.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The morning, when crowds are thin, is a relaxed time to enjoy the port scenery
