Yachimun Village (やちむんの里)

Flow of the course

About this spot

"Yachimun" is the Okinawan word for pottery. Pottery workshops gather in the woodlands of Yomitan Village, creating a distinctive scenic landscape with the symbolic red-tiled climbing kiln. Throughout the grounds, workshops, galleries, and cooperative shops are scattered about, allowing you to select yachimun ceramics—characterized by their plump thickness and generous hand-painted designs of fish patterns and arabesque motifs—at a distance where you can see the makers' faces. Each piece with the same pattern has a unique character, and these handcrafted vessels add a touch of specialness to your everyday table. Take a leisurely walk along green paths, visit the various kiln sites, and carefully choose a piece to bring home to enrich your daily life.

Tips

Opening hours and days off differ by workshop; some shops don't open until later morning, so it's recommended to start with the cooperative shop. Since ceramics are fragile, bringing a towel or large eco-bag as padding is wise for carrying them home. Many paths in the grounds are unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Morning hours, when tour buses are fewer, let you savor the peaceful atmosphere of the village.
