About this spot

This shrine is said to have been founded during the Yoro era of the Nara period by the priest Taicho (泰澄), who opened Mt. Hakusan, and is counted among the Forty-Nine Shrines of Gujo (郡上四十九社). Because Taicho often rested here while traveling between Mt. Hakusan in Kaga and the capital, the village originally called Kariyasu (苅安) was renamed Hakusan (白山) in 1875. On the day of the Atagoyama Fireworks Festival (愛宕山花火祭大会), local night stalls line up around this Hakusan area (白山地内). Once you've secured a spot, fill up on food and wait for the show to begin, taking in the murmur of the clear stream and the quiet of the mountain valley.

Tips

Parking space is limited from evening onward, so early arrival is recommended. It's a good idea to get your food and drinks early.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours 30 minutes. Around sunset, the area along the clear stream is cool and comfortable.
