This is Shimakura District in Sanwa Ward, Joetsu City, where tonight's Sanwa Festival will be held. Endless rice paddies stretch across the landscape, surrounded by mountains, creating a serene satoyama scene. The sight of lush green rice plants swaying in the summer breeze and the chorus of cicadas create a peaceful countryside atmosphere you can't find in the city. Observing the community's festival preparations adds another dimension to your walk.

Tips

The area offers little shade, so bring a hat and plenty of water. Some paths are unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Remember this is a working rural road, so watch for vehicle traffic as you walk.
