About this spot
Among checkpoints established along the Tokaido during the Edo period, this is the only place in Japan where the original building still stands as a historic site. Designated as a Special Historic Site by the nation, it displays materials conveying the history of inspecting travelers passing through the checkpoint. This is a precious opportunity to see the actual office building up close, allowing you to experience the history of Nii as a flourishing post town on the Tokaido. The adjacent museum provides more detailed learning about the checkpoint and daily life in Nii.

2026年7月25日(土)に開催される、諏訪神社に花火を奉納する伝統行事です。19時15分から21時までの長い時間にわたり、新居中学校グラウンドの夜空に花火が打ち上がります。神社への奉納という意味合いを持つこの花火は、地域の人々に長く受け継がれてきた夏の伝統行事です。地元の祭りならではのあたたかい雰囲気の中、家族で夜空を見上げる特別なひとときになります。
Tips
荒天時は中止または延期となる場合があるため、当日の開催可否は湖西市の観光情報で確認しましょう。終了後は周辺道路が混み合うため、余韻を楽しんでから時間差で帰路につくのがおすすめです。足元が暗いので明かりの準備を。
Tips
About 5 minutes walk from Nii Town Station. Admission is around 400 yen for adults. The building retains its original structure, so watch out for steps. Suwa Shrine is just a few minutes' walk away.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes needed. Early afternoon is relatively quiet and you can view leisurely.
