About this spot

This roadside station (michi-no-eki) in Onneyu Onsen (温根湯温泉), Kitami City, is notable for its attached aquarium themed around river creatures. Though small, it's a rewarding aquarium with unique exhibits depicting the river through the four seasons, including a freezing tank and a reproduced waterfall pool. It also has a restaurant and shops typical of a roadside station, so you can enjoy lunch and sightseeing at the same time. It's the perfect spot to start your day at the Onneyu Onsen Festival (おんねゆ温泉まつり).

Tips

Within walking distance of the center of Onneyu Onsen (温根湯温泉). It can get crowded during summer vacation, so arriving in the morning or having an early lunch is recommended. Since the aquarium is indoors, it's also a good place to rest during the hottest part of the day.

Best time to visit

About 2 hours needed. The restaurant gets crowded around midday, so arriving a little earlier is reassuring.
