About this spot

A shop on the main approach shopping street of Usa Jingu, selling local specialties such as Usa Ame (宇佐飴) candy and soft-serve ice cream. Usa Ame carries the tradition of onchi-ame (御乳飴), said to have been given by Empress Jingu to her son, Emperor Ojin, in place of breast milk while raising him. The approach is lined with souvenir shops and eateries, and the aroma typical of Usa, known as a town of karaage (fried chicken), drifts through the air. Enjoying the atmosphere of the approach while snacking your way along is one of the great pleasures of visiting Usa Jingu, and it gets even livelier than usual during the Nagoshi Festival.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from the Oita Prefectural Museum of History. Business hours vary by shop, so if there's a place you're interested in, it's best to visit early.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. It gets more crowded closer to evening, so early afternoon is the best time to go
