A lava cave at the entrance of the Aokigahara Forest Sea with a total length of about 200 meters, designated as a National Natural Monument. The average temperature inside remains around 3 degrees Celsius even in midsummer—cold as a refrigerator—and stepping down causes glasses to fog from the chill, eliciting exclamations from children and adults alike. With its horizontal tunnel type and relatively flat passages, it's perfect as an introductory cave exploration experience. Deep inside are ice walls and a recreated display of how ice was once stored naturally for silkworm cocoons and seeds, connecting you with the ingenuity of people long ago.
Tips
Even in midsummer, a jacket is necessary inside the cave. The floor is wet and slippery, so wear sneakers. Combination discount tickets with Narusawa Ice Cave are frequently available—purchase them if visiting both caves to save money. A few-minute walk through the forest path from the parking lot leads to the cave entrance.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. On hot days, the afternoon coolness is the perfect reward.
