About this spot

This ancient temple, one of Japan's Three Great Monju (日本三文殊), carries on the Rokugo Manzan culture of the Kunisaki Peninsula. Known as a temple where you can gain wisdom, the steep stone-stepped approach leading partway up the mountain is quite a climb, but at the top a spectacular view opens up over the mountains and sea of Kunisaki. The sight of the Oku-no-in (inner sanctuary), built as if clinging to the rock face, is also a highlight. Visiting together as a family, cheering each other on along the way, becomes a great memory in itself.

Tips

There's some distance from the parking lot to the approach, and the stone steps are numerous, so wear comfortable walking shoes. In summer, some sections have little shade, so remember to stay hydrated. Small children can still enjoy visiting partway up without pushing all the way to the top.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes needed. It's relatively cool and easy to walk from morning through midday.
