About this spot

This old temple is known nationwide as a rare sacred site for waterfall austerities, with its principal image of Fudō Myōō carved into the rock face where the waterfall cascades down. The grounds are surrounded by trees, wrapped in a solemn, refreshing atmosphere along with the sound of the falls. Even in midsummer, the area around the waterfall stays cool, letting visitors feel nature's chill while paying their respects. It is a fitting place to begin the day calmly before the evening's fireworks.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from Kamiichi Station; parking available. The grounds include stone steps and wet rocky areas, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Advance reservations are required for those wishing to try the waterfall austerity experience.
