Ancient Temple #37 on the Shikoku Pilgrimage, with Vibrant Painted Ceiling Panels

About this spot

An ancient temple at the heart of Kubokawa, known as the thirty-seventh temple on the Shikoku eighty-eight temple pilgrimage route. The coffered ceiling of the main hall displays 575 brilliantly painted panels donated by local artists and residents, depicting diverse subjects from flowers and birds to kabuki actors. Visiting the temple is worthwhile in itself, but taking time to gaze up at this ceiling art is truly rewarding.
