A grand Taisho-era residence combining a Western-style mansion and adjoining Japanese-style house, both designed by British architect Josiah Conder, who also worked on the Rokumeikan and Nikolai Cathedral. Completed in 1913 as the residence of Shogo Moroto II, a timber magnate known as the 'Forest King,' both the Western and Japanese structures are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The eye-catching four-story tower, sun-filled sunroom, and sprawling lawn garden create picturesque scenes worthy of being featured in films and television dramas. Walking slowly through the mansion, where East and West blend seamlessly, allows you to immerse yourself in the spirit of Taisho modernity—a must-see for architecture enthusiasts who may lose track of time in this masterpiece.
Tips
A 20-minute walk from Kuwana Station, or accessible by bus. Note that the mansion is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). Wear easy-to-remove shoes since you'll need to remove them inside. The garden is accessible in shoes; for a photo capturing both the four-story tower and Western mansion, shoot from the lawn garden angle. Arrive in late morning or early afternoon when the Western building is beautifully lit by natural light.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1.5 hours. Early morning after opening is less crowded, and the Western mansion is beautifully illuminated by morning light.
