Japan's First Western-Style Star Fortress: Visible in Full from Goryokaku Tower

The ruins of Japan's first Western-style star-shaped fortress, built in the late Edo period. The distinctive star shape, surrounded by a moat, is best viewed from the observation deck of the adjacent Goryokaku Tower. This historic site witnessed events from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji Restoration. The park features lush walking paths where families can stroll at leisure. Before the Hakodate Port Festival, this is a great place to experience another side of Hakodate's history.

函館市内一円を舞台に開かれる、港町函館を代表する夏の一大行事「函館港まつり」です。2026年は8月1日(土)から5日(水)までの5日間にわたって開催され、このコースでは初日である8月1日を主役に据えています。会場のひとつである函館グリーンプラザには屋台が立ち並び、催しとともに会場全体がにぎわいます。昼間に訪れた朝市やベイエリア、函館山、五稜郭で感じた港町函館の多彩な魅力の締めくくりにふさわしい、熱気あふれる夜です。

Tips

祭り期間中は会場周辺が混み合うことがあります。公共交通機関の利用が安心です。屋台での買い物には小銭があると便利です。夜は港からの風で肌寒く感じることもあるので羽織ものを。荒天時の開催可否は公式情報で確認しましょう。

Tips

Accessible by car or bus from Hakodate Mountain. The Goryokaku Tower observation deck requires an admission fee. Stay hydrated, as sun exposure is strong in summer.
