This vast forest park opened in 1974 as Japan's first national government park, and its straight, towering poplar-tree avenue is one of the park's signature sights. Cycling courses are also set up within the park, so you can rent a bicycle to tour the expansive grounds. With plenty of room to relax in a lush, green setting, it has long been a beloved family destination for summer vacation outings. Being within the same park as the evening's summer festival venue is also appealing, since it keeps the travel between the two to a minimum.

Tips

The park is very large, so it's worth considering a rental bicycle given the walking distances involved. There is an admission fee to enter the park. Some areas have little shade in summer, so stay hydrated frequently.
