Stroll Through a UNESCO World Heritage Gassho-zukuri Settlement and Experience Mountain Village Scenery

About this spot

Registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site alongside Shirakawa-go, this is Gokayama's most representative gassho-zukuri settlement. About twenty thatched-roof farmhouses still line the valley, surrounded by mountains, and offer extraordinary views from the lookout point overlooking the entire settlement. The intimate arrangement of houses nestled in the narrow valley tells the story of mutual aid and survival in Gokayama's snowy mountains. A short drive from Kami-nashi District, where the festival takes place, it's an essential stop for experiencing Gokayama's primordial landscape.

Tips
