Held September 25–26, 2026, at Hakusan Shrine in Kami-nashi District, the Kokkiriko Festival is Gokayama's premier celebration of the Kokkiriko song, considered one of Japan's oldest folk songs. Dancers move gracefully while striking bamboo instruments called sasara—a sacred art form rooted in the prayers of mountain dwellers and designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property. The shrine grounds fill with spectators who watch the illuminated stage in awe. This quiet, profound festival colors the autumn evening in the gassho-zukuri village.

Tips
The shrine lies in a mountain valley, so parking and surrounding roads may become crowded at night. Arrive early and bring a flashlight for the return journey. Evenings are cool, so bring a jacket.

From 5 p.m. onward; from 6 p.m. onward, when darkness falls and lanterns light up, the festival is most spectacular.
