A park developed on the ruins of Fukuyama Castle, located just north of JR Fukuyama Station, within easy walking distance from the station. Fukuyama Castle, built in the early Edo period, still preserves nationally precious structures including the Fushimi Turret, said to have been relocated from Fushimi Castle, and the Suji-tetsu Gate. The main tower has been converted into a museum, where you can learn about Fukuyama's history and how the castle town developed. From the verdant hilltop, which is surprisingly green considering its location in front of the station, you can overlook the Fukuyama cityscape. This is the perfect place to get a preview of the day's city walk that's about to begin.

福山市の中心部を舞台に、8月13日から15日までの3日間にわたって開催される福山の夏の風物詩です。駅前一帯の通りに太鼓や踊りの音が響き渡り、提灯の灯りが夜の街を彩ります。福山城を望む立地で行われる祭りは、昼間に歩いた城下町の街並みが夜には一変して祭り一色に染まる、そのギャップも楽しみのひとつです。初日となる8月13日の夜は、これから続く3日間の幕開けとして特に活気にあふれています。
Tips
駅前一帯は祭り期間中、歩行者天国や交通規制がかかることがあります。ベビーカーでの人混みは大変なので、抱っこ紐の準備があると安心です。帰りの電車が混み合うため、終演直後を避けて時間をずらすとスムーズです。
Tips
Excellent access: just a 5-minute walk from JR Fukuyama Station's north exit. Admission is required to enter the main tower, but exploring the park itself is free. In summer, some areas have little shade, so bring a hat and drinks.
Best time to visit
Takes about 1 hour. Morning to early afternoon is relatively quiet and good for leisurely exploration.
