The 2026 Tochio Festival is held over two days, August 22 and 23, centered on Yachi-dori and the rest of central Tochio district in Nagaoka City. As night falls, the streets of this small castle town surrounded by mountains are wrapped in lantern light, transforming into the stage for a summer festival where locals and families gather. The first day, the 22nd, is when the festival's excitement first begins to build. After spending the day enjoying Tochio's distinctive scenery and flavors—the castle ruins, the great tree, and the famous fried tofu—the evening festival that follows offers a warm atmosphere unique to this mountain town.

Vehicle traffic around the venue may be restricted during the festival. Temperatures can drop easily in the mountains at night, so it's a good idea to bring something to layer on.

Best time to visit

From the 17:00 start. After 18:00, once the sun sets and the lanterns are lit, the atmosphere feels most festival-like
