Lanterns line the square surrounded by high-rise buildings as families in yukata and local residents dance in circles—a distinctly urban Bon Odori. The 30th, the opening day, carries the excitement of summer vacation just beginning. Dancing in circles against the backdrop of building lights offers a modern urban atmosphere quite different from traditional downtown Bon Odori.
