About this spot

A tourist facility that opens part of the tunnels of the former Ashio Copper Mine, once Japan's top copper producer, to visitors. From the entrance, ride a trolley train into the tunnel, then continue on foot from there. Life-size mannequin displays realistically recreate the work and daily life of the era, from hand-dug mining in the Edo period to the mechanized mining operations from the Meiji era onward. The tunnel stays cool year-round, making it a perfect place to take a break in summer. It's a place where you can learn about the history of the mine that supported Japan's modernization while experiencing it firsthand.

Tips

A few minutes by car from the Ashio Government Office. The tunnel has uneven terrain, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. It's a bit chilly inside the tunnel, so it's reassuring to bring something to layer on. Copper-themed souvenirs are also available at the gift shop.

About 50 minutes. Early afternoon tends to be relatively uncrowded, allowing for a leisurely visit
