About this spot

This sandy beach in Uehara, on the western side of Iriomote Island, is known as a 'singing sand beach' that squeaks underfoot. Because the shore curves beautifully like a crescent moon, it is also called Tsukigahama (Moon Beach). From here you can view the mouth of the Urauchi River and Atok Island, and it is a beautiful spot to watch the sun set over the horizon. It is one of the scenes that symbolizes Iriomote Island's nature, and a great place to stop for some beach time during a day of touring the island.

Tips

There is little shade, so bring a parasol or hat for sun protection. Snorkeling gear may be available for rental.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. When the sunlight is strong, the sea tends to be at its clearest.
