The Nagasaki Lantern Festival takes place throughout the city center, spanning from Shanon Bridge through Kenchosaka to Ohatomizu. In 2026, on August 15 (Saturday) from around 5 PM through dusk and into the late evening, spirit lanterns honoring those who passed away that year will be paraded through the streets. Accompanied by the sound of firecrackers and gongs, this traditional Nagasaki event is rare in Japan and leaves a strong impression on visitors with its unique and vibrant atmosphere. This course is designed so that after exploring Nagasaki's exotic townscapes during the day, you can experience the main event from the evening onward.

On the day of the festival, extensive traffic restrictions are implemented from Shanon Bridge to Ohatomizu, and streetcars may be suspended or rerouted. Firecrackers produce very loud noise, so small children may be startled—adjust your distance based on their comfort. Keep luggage to a minimum and wear comfortable, flexible clothing for viewing.

Best time to visit

The festivities begin around 5 PM when spirit lanterns start to gather. The period from around 6 PM, as dusk falls, into the evening, offers the most vibrant and bustling atmosphere.
