A suspension bridge spanning approximately 297m in length and 54m in height, stretching across the gorge of the Tsutsukawa (Kumano) River. As one of Japan's longest suspension bridges for daily use, it boasts considerable historical significance—built in 1954 when local residents pooled their resources together. Today, it continues to serve as a functioning lifeline connecting the settlements on both banks. The wooden planks beneath your feet sway with each step, and by the middle of the crossing, excited shouts escape almost involuntarily. Below stretches an emerald-green river and expansive riverbed, while above rises the imposing landscape of the layered Kii Mountains. Crossing it together with friends, letting out excited cheers as you reach the other side, makes for a perfect highlight to begin your secret route drive.

Tips

There is a paid parking area (approximately 500 yen for regular vehicles) along Route 168 on the Ueno side. The bridge has a capacity limit of 20 people at a time, and during peak seasons like Golden Week or Obon holidays, one-way traffic restrictions may be enforced. Since the gaps between the wooden planks allow you to see the valley bottom, be careful not to drop your phone or hat, and wear sneakers with good grip when crossing.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour required. Around 9 AM, before tour groups arrive, is the least crowded time and best for taking photos.
