A large bridge that spans the Tokachi River (十勝川) and connects Otofuke Town (音更町) with Obihiro City (帯広市). The cable-stayed form, with white cables spreading out like a folding fan, stands out even from a distance and is cherished as a symbol of the towns of Tokachi. Walk down to the riverbank and the wide flow of the Tokachi River and the unobstructed Hokkaido sky come into view all at once. With the sound of cars crossing the bridge behind you, simply watching the water surface glitter builds excitement for the water play to come. Telling your children that the water in the afternoon's wading pool ultimately traces back to this same Tokachi river system changes the way they take an interest in it. The walking distance is short, making it just right as a gentle warm-up stop in the morning.

宝来中央公園遊水池は、音更町の宝来中央公園にある無料の水遊び場です。浅い遊水池なので、歩き始めたばかりの小さな子でも自分の足で水の中に入り、感触を確かめながら遊べます。例年の期間は5月1日(金)から9月30日(水)、時間は9:00から17:00で、音更町の案内では「5月上旬〜9月下旬」と紹介されています。住宅地の中の公園で地元の家族連れの利用が中心のため、のんびりとした空気の中で過ごせるのが魅力です。水をすくう、流す、足でぱしゃぱしゃする、といった単純な遊びに子どもは驚くほど長く夢中になります。芝生にシートを広げて、遊ぶ様子を眺めながら夕方までゆっくり過ごしましょう。

Tips

遊水池の開設状況は天候や気温に左右されるため、出かける前に音更町の案内で当日の状況を確認してください(出典: https://www.town.otofuke.hokkaido.jp/kurashi/toshi/koen/mizuasobi.html)。17時で終了するので、着替えと片づけの時間を逆算して切り上げましょう。底で足をすべらせないよう、水遊び用サンダルを履かせると安心です。日陰は早く埋まるため、到着したらまず木陰の場所を確保してください。

Tips

There is little shade on the riverbank, so bring a hat and drinks and keep the stop short for comfort. Do not go near the water's edge when the river is swollen or after rain. Park your car following the signs for the parking area on the riverbank side. The light tends to be against you in the evening, so mornings give the nicest photos.
