About this spot

This is a large dome-shaped stadium standing on high ground in Toyohira Ward, with an observatory set on top of its roof. The diagonal walkway that carries you up is itself like a ride, so children are enjoying themselves before they even arrive. Standing at the top, the flat expanse of Sapporo and the mountains beyond come into view all at once, and you can point out roughly where the park you are heading to lies. The area around the dome is an open plaza, so even a short walk after coming down keeps the pleasant scenery going. Looking down on the city from a height and then wading into water at ground level makes for an enjoyable contrast across the day.

月寒公園水遊び場は、札幌市豊平区の月寒公園にある夏だけの浅い水遊び場です。期間は例年7月1日(水)から8月31日(月)まで、9:00〜17:00で、札幌市の案内では「7月上旬〜8月下旬」と示されています。利用は無料です。大型遊具やボート池、パークライフセンターと同じ園内にあるので、水に飽きたら遊具、冷えたら屋内で休憩、と行き来しながら過ごせるのがこの水遊び場のいちばんの強み。水深が浅いため、歩き始めたばかりの子でも自分の足で立って遊べます。授乳室とトイレが園内に整っているので、赤ちゃん連れでも計画しやすいのが心強いところです。

Tips

開放は9:00〜17:00ですが、天候や清掃の都合で変わることがあるため、出発前に札幌市の案内で当日の状況を確認してください。開始と終了の時期は年によって前後するので、シーズンの初めと終わりに行くときは特に確認を。更衣室はないので、水着は下に着ていくか、パークライフセンターのトイレで着替えられる準備をしておくと安心です。札幌の夏は日が陰ると急に涼しくなるので、上がったあとに羽織る一枚を必ず持っていってください。

Tips

The observatory has set opening days and hours, and it may be closed on event days. Be sure to check the official website in advance, along with the admission fee. It is windy up top, so hold on to your hat so it does not blow away. Tsukisamu Park (月寒公園) is about 10 minutes away by car, so leaving between 11:00 and noon gets you there in time for lunch.
