The Lilac Park Water Play Area is a summer-only shallow water play spot at Lilac Park in Toyohira Ward, Sapporo. Water play areas in Toyohira Ward are usually open from Wednesday, July 1 to Monday, August 31, from 9:00 to 17:00. The City of Sapporo lists the season as 「early July to late August」, but Lilac Park usually opens from late July. Admission is free. Because the water is shallow, even children who have just started walking can stand on their own feet and play, which is reassuring. There are no set sessions or queues, so you can go in whenever you like and rest in the shade when you tire, at your own rhythm. There are also days when it closes due to weather or cleaning. There is no changing room, so wear swimwear underneath or bring a wrap towel so you can change. Summer evenings in Sapporo turn chilly as soon as the sun goes behind clouds, so always bring an extra layer to put on afterwards.
