A memorial hall in Makomanai, Minami-ku, presenting the achievements of Edwin Dun, a foreign advisor of the Meiji period. Dun introduced Western livestock-farming techniques to Hokkaido, and a large pasture once spread across what is now the Makomanai district. Photographs and tools from the era are on display inside, giving a concrete picture of what this land looked like before it became a residential area. The building itself is a charming wooden structure in Western style, and its green-framed exterior is a highlight in its own right. Admission is free, so an hour in the morning here is an easy addition.

Tips

Opening days and hours change with the season, so check the official information before visiting. The exhibits are compact, so even small children can go around without losing interest. It is within walking distance of Makomanai Station (真駒内駅) on the subway, making it easy to reach by public transport.
